On 2 July 2021 the European Telecommunications Satellite Organization (EUTELSAT) celebrated the 20th anniversary of its restructuring.
The EUTELSAT intergovernmental organization was established in 1977 by seventeen European countries participating in CEPT (European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations). EUTELSAT’s primary mission was the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the space segment for international communications and video broadcasting over Europe.
On 2 July 2001, following a large-scale restructuring and based on a decision of the member states, all assets, liabilities and operational activities of the EUTELSAT international organization were transferred to the newly established private company Eutelsat S.A. (France). Today, the company is one of the world’s top satellite operators offering a full range of telecommunications and broadcasting services. For many years, Eutelsat S.A. has been fruitfully cooperating with Intersputnik.
At present, the EUTELSAT international organization unites 49 member states. The organization’s main goal is to make sure that the orbit and frequency resource allotted by the International Telecommunication Union to its member states and used by Eutelsat S.A. for commercial activities is used legitimately, oversee the operations of the private company Eutelsat S.A., and ensure that they comply with the organization’s fundamental documents.
Intersputnik and EUTELSAT signed an agreement on cooperation, under which both international organizations established working relations to review matters of mutual interest, participate in events held under the aegis of EUTELSAT and Intersputnik, and discuss key industry initiatives and developments.
We whole-heartedly congratulate our colleagues on the 20th anniversary of the restructuring, which came as a timely strategic decision in the successful history of EUTELSAT and Eutelsat S.A.!This anniversary video gives more insight into the evolution of the EUTELSAT intergovernmental organization and its current activities.
